“I need to find overnight care for my small dog – HELP!”

For many dog owners, going on vacation includes your dog! The world is becoming more dog-friendly and traveling with your dog is becoming easier. My own 3 dogs have enjoyed cross-country car trips and stayed at numerous hotels (which they loved!).

However, for every dog owner, the day will undoubtedly come when, for whatever reason, they have to find overnight care for their dog. A family emergency, business trip or special events (such as weddings) are some situations when it’s difficult to bring your dog. So, what do you do?

In a perfect world, a family member will be willing to come to your house and basically live there while you’re gone. Your dog will already know them and be comfortable with their presence – and you’ll be happy knowing your dog will be cared for by someone you trust.

Another possibility would be for a friend to take care of your dog at their house. Again, a great solution since your dog already knows your friend and you trust that your friend will take good care of them.

However, these two possibilities do not always exist for all small dog owners. Sometimes family members are just too busy to stay at your house with your dog while you’re away. The same is true when you ask a friend to take your dog during busy family times, like Christmas and March Break – sometimes your friends will be away themselves! Or perhaps too busy to take proper care of your furry little one.

What are the other options?

If you live in a multiple-pet household, hiring a pet sitter to sleep at your house while you’re away is one option. Your dogs will benefit from remaining in their home environment. The challenge will be to find a reputable, trust-worthy pet sitter who you trust to not only take care of your pets, but the security and safety of your biggest financial investment – your home.

In my opinion, when friends and family cannot care for your small dog, the best option is home boarding. Preferably, choose a home boarding program where only small dogs will be boarded – you can never be too careful and accidents can and do happen!
