If you've ever taken your dog to a group training class or read a book about dog training, you know that every dog owner should "socialize" their dog.
What does "socialization" mean? Basically, it means exposing your puppy or dog to as many different people, other dogs, places, situations, sounds, etc. as possible. Socializing your puppy or dog should start early in life and continue to be a priority until your dog is at least 2 years of age.
“How do I socialize my small dog?” This is a great question! Here are some ideas:
Start by walking your dog on leash around your local neighborhood. If you have a puppy, it’s very important for them to get to know their neighborhood. Let them sniff trees and pee on appropriate things (not on neighbor’s lawns!). Take some treats to give people you meet on your walk. Your dog will love meeting strangers if that stranger gives him a little treat!
Once your pup is used to your neighborhood, start walking on leash where LOTS of other dogs will be! In Toronto, some great places to go would be High Park, West Dean Park, the Beaches boardwalk, etc. Again, bring treats to give to strangers and also to reward your pup for big accomplishments (like sniffing that big scary-looking Mastiff!)
Bring your dog with you on errands! There are many places you can bring your dog that you’ve probably never thought of, like: Home Depot, Lowe’s, Rona, Canadian Tire, Canada Post, Chapters (but not inside Starbucks), Paws Way (Queen’s Quay), William’s Coffee Pub in Paws Way, Beer Store, LCBO, etc.). Keep your dog on a short leash, practice some “sit” and “down”, give a treat and then continue with your errand.
Enroll your dog in a reputable doggy daycare AND dog training classes. Both are great ways to socialize your dog. If you have a small dog, however, ensure that the daycare and trainer are experienced in the special needs of small dogs.
An important fact all small dog owners should know is that socialization HAS to happen with all 4 of your dog's feet on the floor! In other words, although enjoyable, carrying your puppy in your arms while on a shopping trip cannot be counted as socialization time. However, if your pup is on a leash walking around the store with you while you shop, that's GREAT dog-human socialization!
